The history of joint stock company VILNIAUS DEGTINĖ started at the beginning of the twentieth century, in 1907, in the region of Rokiskis at the Obeliu Spirit Distillery. At that time, the distillery was owned by the Counts and the drinks were prepared exclusively for aristocracy.
Nearly 100 years have passed, the recipes, bottles and labels have changed and the process of production has vastly improved. Today, Obeliu Spirit Distillery is still active in producing rectified grain spirit, the primary component of the strong drinks made by “Vilniaus degtinė”.
Vodka makes the major portion of the company's production sales. The most popular choices are “Bajorų”, “Sobieski” and “Karvedys”. Besides vodka, the company also makes a very special type of brandy called “trauktines,” as well as fine liqueurs. The company's production is made from natural ingredients including nuts, berries, fruits, juices, and honey. Maintaining deep Lithuanian traditions, the products by “Vilniaus degtinė” have won numerous awards for quality and exceptional recipes.
In 1995 “Vilniaus degtinė” was reorganized into a special purpose joint stock company. In November of 2003, more than 80% of the company’s stock was purchased by the French company – BELVEDERE SA.
